Dirk's Place, as the name implies, was built by Kathy's brother Dirk Myers. Although he never lived in the cottage, Dirk's Place has all the comforts of home. It is in fact a one bedroom house built high above Hills Creek. From the quiet residential street, you walk down the brick-and-gravel flower bordered path to the cottage deck. Branches from the trees growing creekside down below reach out to touch the deck next to an outside dining area. A great spot for that cup of coffee or tea on a sunny morning. When you're ready for the Mendocino town experience, it's a short four or five block walk (or drive) to shopping and galleries.

As you step through the entry to the cottage, you see the sitting area with the bedroom in the background. The wall between the front room and the slightly elevated bedroom (split level design) is almost completely open giving a one room feel to Dirk's Place not unlike The Barn. For those times that you would like to shield the bedroom from light in the sitting area, a screen may be lowered to cover the opening between the two rooms.

A nice sized bathroom with shower is just off the bedroom. In this view, the door to the bathroom is through the bedroom door to the right, easily accessible from the front room.

High vaulted ceilings, lamps, and overhead lighting provide a bright, airy living space for reading and game playing. With all windows and doors open, staying at Dirk's Place is like living in a treehouse.

The windows next to the bed look out onto an elevated forest setting. It's about 25 feet down to the creek below. The sound of the trickeling stream and frogs will lull you to sleep if you leave your window open in the spring and early summer evenings.

The dining area as seen from the front room is to the side of the kitchen. The doorway between the kitchen and the front room is very wide adding to the inviting openness of Dirk's Place.

The kitchen area has ample storage, full-size refrigerator, stove, microwave, coffee maker, toaster, and all the usual items that you would expect to find in a kitchen. Even though we believe everything you will need has been provided, just let Kathy or John (her son) know if something has been overlooked.

The view from the kitchen windows is of the outside deck and flower lined entry path. It's great to open the blinds and windows in the morning, listen to the birds, and let the sunlight stream-in. It'll help get your day started off on the right foot.

There are both new and antique furnishings throughout Dirk's Place including one of the best couches you'd ever want to laze around on. It's hard to beat a nice warm fire, a new book, and a comfy couch to transport you to a relaxed and tranquil world.

If you'd like to listen to music or watch a movie instead, the CD and DVD/VCR players are just out of camera view to the left in front of the couch.

Here's a close up view of the dining area all set up for breakfast. The only thing missing are the guests. (Could be you!)

The deck railing is clearly visible just outside the window. The deck is about 6 feet above the ground in this area. The view past the deck (in fact all along the deck) is a treelined backdrop like that from the bedroom windows, very private. The deck's a wonderful place to enjoy breakfast, or in the evening, a moonrise is pretty special.

All in all, if you're looking for a quiet spot to rest, relax, and recharge, you've found it in Dirk's Place.
